DALÍ’S HUT IN A WOOD; BY THE SEA

Admittedly, we have a soft spot for the Costa Brava and its beaches.

Summer is over and we have a bit of free time to enjoy a spot of hiking around Catalonia.

During one of our coastal hikes, not far from the port of Palamós, we decided to wander off the main path to pay a visit to Dalí’s Hut.

This mini house, full of personality, lies in the midst of a coastal macchia wood. 

It was a gift from the businessman Alberto Puig Palau to Salvador Dalí.

The surrealist artist had then just returned to Spain after living for almost a decade in the USA.

Not far from the hut, Puig Palau owned the spectacular villa Mas Juny, which he had purchased from the painter Sert, another friend of Dalí’s.

In the 1930s, Salvador and Gala Dalí would often come to Sert’s exclusive parties at Mas Juny, enjoying the company of other celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich, Visconti, Coco Chanel, and many local intellectuals and personalities. 

Dalí gladly accepted the gift with relish and put the building to use, though he probably never painted any of his works there.

The artist used to say that his creativity reached its full potential at his studio in Portlligat, near Cadaqués.

We walked around the outside of the stone hut and enjoyed the rich fragrance of the Mediterranean trees and plants surrounding it.

Its slanted door and round window contribute to the simple beauty of this traditional building.
