Many a traveler has stood on the north bank of the River Tagus and looked out from Lisbon over the outstanding 25 de Abril bridge.

But taken from the south side–or Margem Sul as the locals call it–how does the view hold up?

Find out with us, as we hop on a ferry across the Tagus towards a cliff with a vertical drop into the river, and then disembark in Cacilhas, a small port neighborhood where disused factories have been turned into small boutiques.

We’ll enjoy the city as locals do, traveling to Cacilhas to relax and dine at tiny eateries serving the freshest seafood.

While exploring this colorful little town, we will cross paths with a real submarine and the magnificent Dom Fernando Il e Glória, a frigate launched in 1843.

We will tour the warship, which was the last to be built by Portugal and also the last to undertake the Carreira da Índia, or the ‘India Run’.

We will continue with a gentle stroll along the river’s south bank to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Lisbon.

Furthermore, we will also visit the Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso church, which stands out for its richly decorated altar and azulejo ceramic ornamentation.

Later, a few more steps take us to the day’s reward: a proper Portuguese meal at an excellent riverside restaurant.

The Margem Sul makes for a great experience and a way to remember Lisbon from a different perspective.
